Buying a new puppy? Buyer beware!

Before purchasing a brand new puppy -- especially a mixed breed 'poo' or 'doodle', make sure you check out the breeder you are purchasing from. Some are great, with nothing to hid -- others are not so nice.

We recently had a run in with a place in Hartland, MN that was not so nice to us. They refused to let us see the parents of the puppy we wanted to purchase, when we persited, they became extremely unpleasant. Needless to say, we did not purchase a puppy from them.

There are some great websites that give advise on purchasing a puppy, please educate yourself before you unknowingly purchase a puppy from a puppy mill:

I was surprised to see your comment on the internet. I too had a similar experience with this breeder. She refused to let me see th parents of my dog, nor would she allow me to see her kennels. I went ahead & bought the sweetest mixed breed dog from her anyway. My dog was sold to me as a female, pomeranian/poodle mix. When I took my dog in to have her spayed, we found out that she had immature male scrotal sack, enlarged external female genitalia & when they opened her up to spay her, she had no internal sex organs whatsoever. She had numerous health issues the first year of her life, after huge medical bills to improve her health issues - we now have a high maintenance , but sweet dog. Because of her genito-urinary issues, she has chronic urinary tract infections. She has a crooked trachea related to breeding issues in pomeranians & chokes very easily. I contacted the breeder & she got very belligerant & refused to honor her guarantee stating that the issues were nothing related to her breeding practices. She became so verbally abusive that I wound up hanging up on her. Because of her breeding & business practices I reported her to the SPCA as needing inspection as a possible puppy mill. To my knowledge she is still in business. Because of the questions I had with her breeding practices, I had DNA testing done on my dog. The DNA testing showed that my dog was Pomeranian & Bischon Frise mix & had no poodle in her DNA. I would never recommend this breeder to anyone. As many dogs as she breeds, the unwillingness to show the parents & her kennels really sets off red flags!

I have read both of your comments, and I totally disagree. I have purchased two puppies and my daughter has purchased one puppy from pepups. All three of our puppies are 100% healthy and have never had any health issues. Our babies are very sweet and active and I don't know what we ever did without them. I have referred several of my friends and coworkers to pepups as well. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and the many times I called her starting out with my first puppy, she was extremely patient and helpful. I don't understand your comment Sandi. All of pepups puppies come with a 1 year heatlh guarantee, if you didn't follow the guidelines of the guarantee how is that the breeders problem? How would the breeder know what was inside of the puppy? Pepups is also vet inspected as well as USDA inspected. If they were doing something wrong, the logical conclusion would be that they would no longer exist. Buyer Beware of comments that make no sense and that are illogical. Please take the time to check out pepups. If every puppy was cared for as well as these puppies, the world would be a better place.

I too bought our cute puppy from pepups. We had a bad experience as well. I was told by susan that our puppy had an ingroinal hernia and that it was a quick and easy fix and they do it when they do the spay. When she explained it it seemed like it wasn't a big deal. After going to my vet a few days later my vet explained to me that it was a seperate surgery that can have complications and expensive. After contacting Susan and Rex about this issue they wouldn't give us our money back and in fact told us we got a fantastic deal on the dog. I felt very mislead by them and wouldn't recommend buying a puppy from this breeder.

THIS BREEDER IS HORRIBLE!!!!!

I also got a puppy from there without doing my homework!

My puppy ended up having to have a huge surgery done on his hind hip because of incorrect growing of his leg bones! which is a birth defect. He was only 5 months old

I took it to Susan and Rex and after MUCH fighting, the MN puppy law (if it is a genetic defect, they have to refund you up to the full amt you paid for the dog) she finally cut me a check. it was a NIGHTMARE!!
I dont feel bad about buying from her, because i feel like i saved my dogs life from a puppy mill life.

HI All

I would like to retract my statement. I was off in my description on what Susan and Rex and their buisness entails. They have a great dog business and are extremely helpful and honest in their business transactions with their dogs.

They take care of you from the beginning and carry the fantastic service on even after you have had your dog for many years.
They were completey coorperative and did reimburse me for the surgery my dog had.

They care about all of their dogs like they are their children. They will only sell their dogs after careful evaluation of the buyer and if they think you will be a good dog owner. Very caring people.

Thanks.

Randi said...

I also want to retract my puppy mill comment. They live on a loving and caring farm and provide only the best circumstances for their dogs.

I would encourage people to inquire about dogs from Pepups. They are knowledgable, friendly and GREAT dogs. My dog I have received from them has been nothing but the best things in our life.

Besides its early on surgery, it has been nothing but 100% healthy.

Just following up, because I do feel that this company has been mistaken to many, and they are just caring people doing what they love. Raising and breeding dogs. Check them out! :)

I also bought a puppy from Susan and Rex. I took it to my vet within the 4 day period as instructed and was told my puppy had PARVO. I called Susan and she was very hostile with me and my VET and she demanded the puppy back that night. She did refund my money with hostility. It was a terrible experience and I would not recommend that kennel. I do believe it is a puppy mill.

I bought a little yorkie poo from Susan in June of 2010. She is the happiest and healthiest puppy I have ever owned. When I brought her into the vet for her first check up my vet said he was amazed at her health and personality. Chanel is almost two now and I have not had a single problem with her. I was a bit worried when I pulled up to the house because of the big shed in the back and I also thought it was odd that she would only let you choose two dogs to see when you went. Needless to say, I left with my dog and she a lively, active, personality filled, healthy little girl.

Never never never. I purchased a yorkie poo November 2012 and Susan told me she had a cold. Right away I took her to the Vet and found out she had kennel cough, pneumonia, a collapsed lung and possible non-growing heart. Susan will not answer my phone calls, emails or letters. She is not a breeder nor does she have a breeder license. She is a pet broker. Last time she was inspected she had 238 dogs on her property; of course she won't let you see them though! She also keeps a 12 gauge shot gun in her office for "trouble makers." Please call and complain to her county! Save those poor puppies!

Anonymous said...

Also, she will hang up on you if ask about parentage, etc. I told her per Mn Pet Lemon Law she has to compensate me for Gertie's Vet bills, that's when she started ignoring me. I have been calling the ASPCA, humane society, sheriff dept, law offices and I suggest if she has done any of you wrong that you do the same. That's the only way we can get her to stop!

Anonymous said...

Are you still around Sandi? Would love to chat with you about this! I have a goal to stop her!

Anonymous said...

I was mistaken on the dog count. She has 432 dogs on her property. From the research I have done, every time someone complains about their puppy she ignores them. Finally I sent a sheriff to her house and we have a court date set. PLEASE do not purchase from this woman. All the puppies born have different birthdays- how would that happen if she was a legitimate breeder?

We purchased a Schnoodle from this backyard breeder in June of 2007. She had so many health issues, she didn't live past 7 1/2 years old. We lost her this past Wednesday. She had deformities of the legs, kidney and liver damage (from the time she was 6 months old), and horrible skin issues from 6 months old. She was such a sweet thing and we'll miss her dearly. Please do NOT purchase from these people. All you're doing is funding them to stay open and cross-breed dogs with major health issues.

I went there via a referral and purchased two Yorkie Poo puppies without doing my homework. After getting the dogs home, it was clear what had happened to them. The youngest one was more energetic and mostly well adjusted, but the little four month old was completely traumatized. She barely wanted to leave her kennel and there was no normal puppy investigating from either of them. They had no idea how to act.
They were left in a cage 99% of the time. I guarantee it. There was no attempt to have those puppies paper trained or socialized. That is a puppy mill and the only thing that makes me not completely hate myself for supporting her is that I rescued two little darlings. Beware!

Sue,
Quick update. The dogs are both very smart and well adjusted. Both ate several times and dutifully went potty in the litter box. They slept through the night with no whining. Unfortunately, even after we bathed the little guys, Carly's allergies are in high gear. I think we made a mistake.
I know you said you would not take them back, but I can assure you they have not been exposed to any other animals or even put outside. I told Carly we would give it a week to see if her allergies calm down. If you will not take them back, would you be willing to refer people looking for yorkie poos to my email? I am afraid they may need a different home.
Sincerely,
Kristy

I went to look at a couple puppies at PEPUPS. Susan was very unpleasant. I didn't purchase a puppy from her and glad I didnt! Went to another place and it was much more pleasant of an expierence. I think she cares enough about her pups to bring her money but nothing more than that it's just a business for them at this point. Very suspicious if this is not a puppy mill! At the least she could be kind to potential customers! You question her you better watch out! Vicious woman!!

My family scheduled an appointment 5 days ago, and scheduled it for today. We decided as a family today that we really hadn't done enough research and weren't ready, so we called Susan back and left a message explaining our situation. We explained that we wanted to wait until summer, when the kids would be home to train it and it wouldn't be alone all day right away. Susan, the rudest lady I've spoken to in a very long time, called us back basically telling us how disrespectful we were because we cancelled on her (didn't know we were supposed to work around HER schedule if we're buying the dog) and that training it when we would be home would cause the dog to have separation anxiety, yet she didn't care that it would be home all day while we were at school and work. Clearly, this "breeder" knows NOTHING about raising puppies. We were tempted to buy the dog after reading these reviews to save the poor thing from these horrible people, but we were placed on a "no sell" list ,according to Susan. Definitely a learning experience. Do your homework and read up on breeders before purchasing! Do not support these cruel, greedy, vicious people!

I had a shitty experience with her I got a pup from her about 2 weeks ago from her and the puppy was throwing up when I brought her him went to the vet the next day due to the puppy law and the vet said she looked sick I was having to force feed her called the owner to see if the dog I had was sick before I got her and she was rude telling me I can't take care of the dog and to bring her back the next day my dog was still throwing up and I brought her to the vet again the doctor said she had a viral infection and had it before we got her and she might not get better she had an IV had to get meds and her blood sugar was low due to her not wanting to eat I had my boyfriend call her and she yelled at us saying we are shitty people that can't take care of the dog my vet told me that there is nothing I could do she was sick when I got her the breeder SUE and REX told me to bring her back to get my money back so I did and when I got there REX held her like she was nothing throwing her around in his hands while SUE told me its my fault
Do not buy from them!!!!
I want this business to go out of business they are not good breeders!!!

I'm sad to know these people are still in business. We purchased our Zoey from them in 2007 and only had her for 7 years before she died from genetic kidney and liver failure, as well as a genetic bone deformity and skin disease. We have to start doing something about these people. There are many ways we can start the process of having them shut down, but everyone has to help. If we sit by and do nothing, nothing will be done.

1. Send complaints to the USDA, health department, and Department of Trade and Consumer Protection.

2. Contact the IRS because they're most likely not paying sales tax. The DA will be interested in tax evasion.

3. Contact the county because there is no evidence from their website that they're rabies vaxxing.

I called this breeder (puppy mill) looking for a cockapoo. They had a "sale". I asked about seeing the parents and Susan became defensive right away. She does not allow anyone to see the parents. I asked about the parents (breed and if they're purebred). She was also very short and said I couldn't have any documentation about the parents. This woman was extremely mean and defensive. She said she didn't feel comfortable selling to me and hung up. I think she was worried I was questioning her authenticity. STAY AWAY.

Andy Larson: We have been breeding since 1993. After dealing with as many suspicious people (such as yourself) I suspect you are a breeder (and for all I know a PUPPY MILL). After talking with you for just a few minutes and the questions only a breeder would ask, it was evident that you are not a fitting home for one of our pups! So as it states on our website: We do have the right to refuse sale to anyone for any reason. Our practices have been in play from the beginning and we do not deviate from them. As breeders and as such we will not allow contamination into our facilities or harm to happen to one of our puppies or adults. Because you found this not to your liking: I am defensive and extremely mean and am a Puppy Mill. I stated my position and said thank you and have a nice day, but I am not placing a puppy with you and ended the conversation.

puplove123678 APRIL MILNE AND GARRETT ARNDT Petunia was purchased on July 24th. On July 26th I have documentation from their vet that PETUNIA had hypoglycemia due to lack of being fed properly. When April called on the 27th and told us of this: I begged to have Petunia returned so that she could be taken care of properly. My request was DENIED!! "April stated they could take care of her" because Garrett's Mother has a 4 lb. dog and they would do just fine. Obviously they didn't! Garrett texted on July 30th @ 8:49 AM and stated that Petunia could not stand any longer and was making weird noises. They wanted their money back and would bring her back to us at their convenience. I asked that she be brought back immediately so hopefully I could bring her back around. Their convenience was 2 PM. Petunia was lifeless!! April showed no signs of remorse. All she wanted was her money back and to leave as fast as she could. By this point Petunia's liver had shut down and she died in my arms. These comments by April against us are to sooth her guilty soul! THEY MURDERED MY BABY WITH NO REMORSE!!

Obviously a puppy mill. go to their website.A reputable breeder doesn't have dozens, possibly hundreds of dogs! Nor do they hide behind the old "no one can come in the kennels because they could be carrying diseases".Who? the people or the dogs? Shame on those of you who couldn't figure this out from the website and bought puppies anyhow. Shame on the vet who gives his stamp of approval to this. These "breeders" (of mainly expensive mutts) can't be blamed too much, its you suckers who don't do your research and buy from them that are at the root of the problem.

We have two adorable Cockapoos, both from the Possehl's. Riley is now 7 years and and Ruby is four. We were given folders with information on each, which also included descriptions and pictures of their parents. We referred good friends there, who added a Shih Poo puppy to their family. They in turn referred their son, who added a Yorkie Poo to his home. All of us had great experiences and have happy and healthy pups who fill our homes with love.Susan couldn't have been more pleasant and easy to deal with, and I completely understood her reasoning for not allowing people into her breeding facility and for only showing a limited number of puppies. I feel sad for those who have had bad experiences, and will say that in any situation, there are two sides to every story.

We also purchased a very loving Cockapoo from these folks. While he seems perfectly healthy and we are totally in love with him we were deceived. He was to be 20-25# and is currently at 42-44#....not overweight and 2 years old. We were deceived by what he was bred with, obviously not a miniature poodle, more like a standard. We too were not allowed in the barn. I asked for pictures 3 or more times now of his parents and 2 years later still have not received them. Yes, I should have researched this, but when you love a pup, you just love a pup. Hopefully we will have many more years with our baby.

We purchased a pup in September 2016, altho didn't buy from Susan BUT from her subsidiary, Maria, 4puppypaws. We have had A HORRIBLE 7 months dealing with, according to OUR veterinary, problems that are a result of our baby's treatment for the 1st 14 weeks under Maria's/? Care. With our vets assistance, we did everything in our power to rehabilitate this poor pup, but sadly we had to make the decision NO LOVING PET OWNER EVER WANTS TO MAKE this week. Be careful, as this ppl are selling in two states that I know of, under several different email addresses but when traced back, it's the same pup pictures and phone numbers! HEARTBROKEN

I just got off the phone with Susan at Pepups, well more accurately, she hung up on me after refusing to sell me a dog. I told her our family wanted to get a puppy this summer while the kids would be home and could be with it while it got accustomed to our house. She immediately jumped down my throat and belittled me about how that is the exact wrong way to raise a puppy. She said the puppy would have separation anxiety and severe psychological issues for the rest of its life. Her logic was that once the kids go back to school then the puppy will have no one to be with and it would be traumatized. She said it's not the right way to start out a puppy... she then refused to sell me a dog. Now I'm a little mad and I could tell she is a little crazy so I figure "what the hell" I proceed to ask her - "what about your current puppies? Are they not home with you 24/7 every day just like they would be with my kids? Isn't that what the puppies are already accustomed to?" She couldn't handle the logic and practically blew a gasket. She muttered some words incoherently and then hung up on me. Heads up to anyone looking to buy a puppy from her. The elevator doesn't stop on every level for her...

This was where we found our puppy on 03/08/08. We had a very positive impression of the place with lots of puppies in the kitchen. We chose the feisty one, of course, and had almost 10 years with her until she died of liver failure that the vet thought was genetic. I cannot blame the breeder for that. I called pepups and was in for quite a surprise. The new policies (10/17) are that you can only see a total of 2 puppies, that you cannot see the puppies with other puppies, and that you must place a $100 refundable deposit to see the puppies. I brought up that we had seen lots of puppies almost 10 years ago and was told we had seen three at most. The woman was so rude and abrupt that I could not believe it was the same person from whom we had bought our puppy 10 years ago -- but it was. I also was concerned how the puppies might be treated if this was how she treated customers.
Then I found this blog and it made my heart sink. There was a puppy pictured on the website that I liked, but we decided against buying her because maybe this place is a puppy mill. Maybe we would be rescuing the little puppy but what about the poor dogs that are bred there.

I went looking for breeders that were not puppy mills and found two. I talked to the owners of both of them, and they were very nice and did not breed a lot of puppies. The two breeders were suespoos.com and pups2pets.net. I found pups2pets.net on hoobly.com.

Pups2pets.net had a puppy that looked like a good fit for our family, but we had to wait to buy the puppy until after an out of town trip. My husband missed his flight home from work and did not come. When I got home, there was the puppy! What a surprise! He told me that the breeder was clearly not a puppy mill. The breeder was on a farm off a dirt road near Hinckley.

Maybe you can avoid the potential pitfalls of a puppy mill and find a good breeder like suespoos.com or pups2pets.net. Or you can look on hoobly.com.

Consider suespoos.com or pup2pets.net instead. Look on hoobly.com. If you love dogs, stay away from a mill. I shudder to think that we bought from this mill 10 years ago.

It's clear she has had a lot of time with other puppies. She was not in a kennel all by herself.

We purchased two Yorkie Poos from Susan and both passed within 4 years of health issues. I should have known it was a puppy mill the first time I went and while we were looking at our puppy she got a phone call and was very aggressive with the potential buyer on the phone telling them they could not see the kennels that the dogs are kept. It took me aback but we had traveled a long way and had our two small children with. I’m sure I just didn’t want to believe that she wasn’t reputable. But after the health problems my dogs endured and premature deaths I knew it was a breeding issue.

Something today made me search to see if she was still in business hoping I would find that she was not. I’m heartsick to read all of these testimonials confirming what I suspected all along. I am going to file a complaint with the state and I hope everyone else will too. She needs to be shut down to save the poor animals in her mill.

2 years ago I went to get a puppy from Susan. There were so many red flags before I went there but I just didn’t put it all together. One was not being able to see the parents. She kept changing what she was when it came to saying what breed was what when it came to her parentage. She made me send the $100 deposit with 2 hours. When I got there my friend said “you go in and if you are not out in 15 minutes I’m calling the police.” When we went in there were 2 puppies in a wooden pen. I was there to buy a Cavapoo. From the minute I saw her I knew immediately she was no more Cavapoo then I was. When my friend picked her up the puppy clung to her beyond belief. I told Susan she didn’t look like the picture and she made all these excuses. The puppy has the “get me the heck out of here” with her grip so tight and her head buried in my friends shoulder. I paid and got the heck out of there with the puppy. The vet agreed that there was absolutely no cava in this supposed Cavapoo. I call her a schnoodle gone wrong. I sent Susan an email listing out her lies. She called me and left a voicemail screaming that I didn’t deserve to have s dog and I was a horrible person. The puppy was clearly traumatized. I put her in a metal crate and she would go ballistic crying and trying to get out. I change the type of kennel and it was like night and day. She was very very timid and still shows signs of PTSD. I would love to know why spray bottle make her run and hide. I feel that I saved her. She doesn’t have any health issues and with much love she has turned into an adorable sweet puppy but she is a complete and utter mutt. Maybe this..maybe that. She is also terrified of getting into the car and is so anxious she throws up. I’d like to
know why that happens as well. So run as fast and as far away from this horrible puppy mill.

Purchased 2 Cockapoo siblings back in 2016. We were not allowed to see the parents and could only see 3 siblings at a time. A legit breeder has no issue with a potential buyer seeing the parents of a puppy. There is a building out back where all the dogs are kept yet you could not enter that building. Susan was concerned you could bring disease to the animals! Was very defensive when I asked why I couldn't see the parents and suggested that maybe she was not the "breeder" for me. I find it hard to believe with the large number of breeds she has available combined with the number of dogs available, this is a legit "breeder". People who tend to "hide" things, have reason to do so. Makes me so sad for those poor animals trapped in that building and the treatment they are getting. Very questionable "breeder". If she treats customers so poorly, you can only imagine how poorly the animals are being treated.

Completely agree with those warning about this breeder -- STAY AWAY!!!! There is a common thread here. I purchased my yorkiepoo through a pet shop in IL back in 2007. In 2013, I found out she was born with polycystic kidney disease. I had to put her down last night after witnessing a horrible decline over the past month. I would not wish that upon anyone. This made me wonder how these people treated my dogs' parents -- detecting PKD is not that hard. Save yourself grief and pain. I also filed complaint and poor rating in the BBB website. We need to find a way to put these people out of business. Next, I will send letter to Humane Society. Shame on them, some clown affiliated with them has posted bogus inspection summaries on the Possehl Enterprises webpage. These people lie and do not care about the animals. The fact they will not let anyone come to their facility and see the parents -- HUGE RED FLAG!!!!!I will share my experience with anyone, anytime. I want to make sure my suffering helps protect other people and pets.
